When it runs
First Tuesday of the month on the courthouse steps. The Sheriff's Office page posts under the heading "Upcoming Sheriff's Sale": "Property Tax Sale - May 5th 2026", "Location - South steps of the Court House", "Time - Coming soon", "Listing - Coming soon". May 5, 2026 was a first Tuesday, matching the Texas Tax Code § 34.01 first-Tuesday sale date.
Registration and deposit

Not published online. The county posts only the sale date and location; the sale time and the property listing are both marked "Coming soon". Texas Tax Code § 34.015 requires a bidder to present a written statement from the county assessor-collector showing no delinquent property taxes owed, so call the Sheriff's Office at (940) 937-2535 before the sale to confirm where to obtain it. Note that the Texas Comptroller county directory states the Childress County Tax Assessor-Collector "does not collect property taxes" and that the appraisal district may collect them; the Childress County Appraisal District (940-937-6062) accepts property tax payments online.

Sale format and venue
Childress County sells redeemable tax deeds at an in-person sheriff's sale on the south steps of the Childress County Courthouse in Childress. No online auction platform appears on any county page. As of July 25, 2026 the only posted notice is the May 5, 2026 sale, and the county still shows the sale time and the property listing as "Coming soon", so the posting is stale and no bid list URL exists yet. Watch the Sheriff's Office page for the next posting. Childress County does not appear on the current Texas tax sale listings of Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott or MVBA, so no delinquent tax law firm listing was found for this county. In person on the south steps of the Childress County Courthouse. No online auction platform.

Childress County tax sale list and auction calendar

For Childress County tax sale 2026 searches, use the county-run sources below rather than a copied parcel list, and confirm the parcel, registration cutoff, deposit, and payment deadline against the county before you bid. If the parcels on this list are vacant land rather than houses, what buying land at a tax sale hands you is the place to start.

  1. Get the advertised list

A county sale-list URL is still being verified. Use the office and platform details on this page before relying on a copied list.
  2. Register to bid

Not published online. Full requirements are in the sale card above.
  3. Sale day

First Tuesday of the month on the courthouse steps. The sale is live and in person; there is no online bidding platform. Confirm the venue and hour with the county office before you go.
  4. Confirm with the office

If the list, platform, and notice disagree, use Childress County Sheriff's Office as the source to confirm which parcels are actually offered.

Before you bid in Childress County

  1. Start with the live sale list

The county sale-list URL is still being verified. Use the county office contacts below and confirm the advertised parcels directly before you price a bid.
  2. Confirm registration and deposit

  3. Check the state rules that change the bid

Read the Texas due-diligence checklist before bidding. Redemption, liens that survive a tax deed, title cleanup, and payment deadlines can change what a parcel is worth. Which liens survive is state law, so read what survives a tax deed in Texas before you price the title work.
  4. Set a walk-away number

Work out what the parcel is actually worth with the rural land value estimator, then turn it into a ceiling with the tax deed max-bid calculator.

Over-the-counter (leftover) purchases

Texas has no over-the-counter certificate list. Parcels that draw no sufficient bid are struck off to the taxing unit that requested the order of sale, and that unit may resell them at any time by public or private sale. A public resale requested through the sheriff or constable may be sold for any amount. A private sale generally may not go below the lesser of the market value stated in the judgment or the total judgments against the property, unless every taxing unit entitled to proceeds consents. Ask the county or its delinquent-tax law firm for the current struck-off inventory.

County notes

  • The Childress County Sheriff conducts the tax sale and posts the notice. The Sheriff's Office page reads: "Upcoming Sheriff's Sale / Property Tax Sale - May 5th 2026 / Location - South steps of the Court House / Time - Coming soon / Listing - Coming soon".
  • The sale is in person on the courthouse steps. No online auction platform (GovEase, Bid4Assets, RealAuction, MVBA online) is referenced anywhere on the county, sheriff, or appraisal district sites.
  • No sale or delinquent list URL is published. The county itself marks the listing "Coming soon". Childress County is not carried on the Perdue Brandon (pbfcm.com) county tax sale page or MVBA's upcoming Texas tax sales page.
  • Childress County Tax Assessor-Collector: Kathy Dobbs, 100 Avenue E NW, Ste. 5, Childress, TX 79201-3721, phone 940-937-2232, fax 940-937-2250, email taxassessorcollector@childresstx.us. The county web page prints the ZIP as 75110, which conflicts with the Texas Comptroller directory listing of 79201-3721; 79201 is the ZIP other Childress County offices use.
  • The Texas Comptroller county directory states of the Childress County Tax Assessor-Collector: "This tax office does not collect property taxes. When a county tax assessor does not collect property taxes, the county appraisal district may be responsible for collecting some or all local property taxes." The Childress County Appraisal District (Twila Butler, chief appraiser, 1710 Avenue F NW, Childress, TX 79201, phone 940-937-6062, email childresscad@childresstx.us) runs online property tax payment through Certified Payments.
  • Sheriff's Office contact details from the same page: non-emergency (940) 937-2535, fax (940) 937-2395, business hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., records address 1005 Avenue F NW Childress Texas 79201, email sheriff@childresstx.us.
  • Bidders should confirm the sale time and the property list by phone, because the county publishes neither ahead of the posted date.

Texas rules

Redemption
The redemption clock runs from the date the purchaser's deed is filed for record, not from the sale date. Property that was the owner's residence homestead or was land designated for agricultural use when the suit or the warrant application was filed, and any mineral interest, may be redeemed on or before the second anniversary of that filing. Every other property may be redeemed only through the 180th day after the deed is filed. When a parcel is struck off to a taxing unit instead, the period runs from the date the taxing unit's deed is filed for record. The former owner has no right to use, possess, or collect rent from the property while the redemption right runs, and the right of redemption cannot be sold or transferred: any instrument purporting to transfer it is void.
Deed deposit
The Tax Code sets no statewide deposit and no buyer premium. Section 34.01 directs the officer to conduct the sale the way similar property is sold under execution, so payment terms are set locally by the officer who runs the sale. Most Texas counties collect the full bid in cash or by cashier's check on the day of the sale. Confirm the terms with the county before you bid.
Homestead deeds
Texas sets no separate opening bid for a homestead. What changes on a homestead parcel is the exit: a residence homestead, land designated for agricultural use when the suit or warrant application was filed, and a mineral interest all carry a two-year redemption right instead of 180 days, and the premium the owner pays can reach 50 percent in the second year. Price a homestead parcel for that longer clock.
Surplus proceeds
The officer pays any excess proceeds to the clerk of the court that issued the order of sale. The clerk holds the excess for two years after the sale and notifies the former owner when the amount exceeds $25. A claim must be filed before the second anniversary of the sale. The court pays established claims in statutory priority: a purchaser at a sale later adjudged void, taxing units for post-judgment or omitted taxes, other lienholders, taxing units for unsatisfied judgment amounts, and then the former owner. Anything unclaimed is distributed to the taxing units.
Governing statute
Tex. Tax Code Chapter 34

A tax deed does not convey marketable title. Most buyers file a quiet title action before they can resell or insure the property. See the due diligence guide.
